Peanut butter is a sandwich spread made from ground peanuts. It is very popular in the US, the Netherlands, the UK and Germany. Calvé is by far the most well-known brand in the Netherlands. Indeed, quite a few Dutch people can’t picture life without their beloved Calvé peanut butter. In contrast to that of other brands, Calvé’s peanut butter isn’t overly sweet and has a creamy texture. Did you know that about 585 peanuts are used to make a single standard-size pot of Calvé peanut butter? This gives it a delicious and authentic peanut taste.
Calvé’s popularity can’t be attributed entirely to the quality of its peanut butter. The numerous commercials that have been broadcast on Dutch TV over the years have certainly played a part in its success. In fact, many Dutch people have grown up seeing the brand’s advertisements and know its slogans by heart.
How did peanut butter arise?
Peanut butter was conceived in the US around 1839 during a period of excess peanut production. In the Netherlands, Calvé didn’t start producing it until 1948. However, it rapidly became widespread. Being a nutritious product rich in unsaturated fats and with a high content of vitamins and minerals, it was very welcome in the years of scarcity following World War II. Interestingly, while in most languages peanut butter was named by combining the word peanut with either the word butter or cream, in Dutch it was called peanut cheese (pindakaas), since the word butter could only be used for actual, milk-derived butter.
How do you make peanut butter sandwiches?
Nowadays, Calvé produces several kinds of peanut butter. In addition to the regular one, you will find a crunchy variant with bits of peanut and a light version with a lower fat content. Regardless of your choice, you can enjoy it on its own or in combination with other bread toppings. How about the famous peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the US? If that’s not for you, though, you could consider combining peanut butter with chocolate sprinkles like the Dutch do. Lastly, for those of you wanting to try out new flavours, here’s an idea: take a slice of bread, spread peanut butter on it, add a thin layer of chilli paste (sambal) and top it off with some sliced cucumber. Enjoy!
