What exactly is ontbijtkoek? The Dutch word ontbijtkoek literally means breakfast cake, but don’t be misled into thinking that it is only eaten for breakfast! Ontbijtkoek differs from other cakes in that it is made with rye flour and contains a mixture of spices, including cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, to which it owes its characteristic flavour.

Peijnenburg’s ontbijtkoek

When it comes to ontbijtkoek, the brand Koninklijke Peijnenburg is the unquestioned market leader. This manufacturer has the honour of bearing the title Koninklijke, a distinction awarded by the King of the Netherlands to organisations considered to be of national value. Peijnenburg obtained this honorary title in 1983 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

The unmistakable red wrapper

You’ll find few Dutch people who are not familiar with Peijnenburg’s red wrapper, which has been around since the early days of the company, founded more than 130 years ago. Peijnenburg has always devoted special attention to the wrappers of its cakes. This sensitivity towards the packaging’s design is in part due to the close relationship between the founder’s son and several artists. It is also the founder’s son who in 1915 started to produce ontbijtkoek on an industrial scale.

When and how to eat ontbijtkoek

Despite what its name suggests, ontbijtkoek can be eaten at any time of day. It is an ideal mid-morning snack that will go very well with your cup of tea or coffee. Being a spiced cake, it is already very tasty on its own, although you may prefer to spread some butter or marmalade on top of it.
