Perhaps you´ve heard of it, but what exactly is Speculoos pasta? It´s a spreadable bread coating based on speculaas. You can also call it a cookie butter. Originally, speculoos is a typical Belgian product, which is very popular and well known to Belgian people. Nowadays, it is also available in other countries such as the Netherlands and Germany, where it also became popular quickly. Many people use this pasta on bread, crackers or for example waffles. Speculoos consists of flour, brown sugar and butter. There is some confusion between speculoos pasta and speculaas pasta. The difference is that speculaas contains spicy specimens with a typical cinnamon flavor and speculoos does not contain this spices. Lovers of speculaas who prefer not to have a special pasta, but would like to taste the typical herbal flavours, can also choose to put a piece of speculaas between their bread. This is also very tasty and a good alternative.

The origin of Lotus speculoos pasta
At the end of the eighties, Calvé introduced various spreadable pastes, including speculaas pasta, a coconut paste and a white chocolate pasta. The spreadable cookie butter was not really a `hype` among the people until in 2007 two inventors named Els Scheppers and Danny de Maeyer participated in an inventory program in Belgium called 'De Bedenkers'. The pasta of Els Scheppers was just a bit better than that of Danny de Maeyer, and this became available on the Belgium market in spring 2008 under the name Lotus speculoos pasta. The pasta from Els Scheppers sold very well and in 2009, there were different types of speculoos or cookie butter on the market, such as the crunchy and the smooth ones. The Lotus Speculoos pasta Crunchy has a more granular structure than the ´normal´ version of the pasta. The smooth is, as the name says, a ´slick´ paste.
