Who else enjoys every now and then a delicious currant bun? Currant buns are round buns filled with currants and sometimes raisins. They are often eaten for lunch or brunch and make for a perfect snack on a day out. You may eat them with butter, jam, Gouda cheese or other toppings, or you may of course enjoy them on their own.
The currant bun arose at the end of the seventeenth century in England, where a clergyman imported currants from Zakynthos, a Greek island on which he had served in his youth. He combined the currants with the traditional bakery of Hampshire, giving rise to the currant bun as it is still known today.
The Dutch currant bun or krentenbol
The krentenbol must by law contain at least 30% currants, otherwise it cannot be called a currant bun and is instead a fruit bun, which contains about 10% currants. Did you know that in the Netherlands currant buns were not originally eaten for lunch but at funerals? The mortician would order bread at the bakery for the funeral, including crossed currant buns filled with enough currants to render the inside of the buns completely black. These were called leedbollen, which is Dutch for grief buns. Currant buns also feature in a Dutch saying, which could be translated as ‘life is not a sweet currant bun’, meaning that life is not always easy and has its ups and downs.
In the Netherlands you can find currant buns in almost every supermarket or bakery. You can of course also make them at home. In Spain you will find them at Super Lekker, so come and get your currant buns for when you have a craving!
