The history of liquorice

Liquorice contains ingredients from the glycyrrhiza glabra plant. A part of this plant is known as a cure for stomach ulcer and a cold. Centuries ago this was already used by ancient civilization. Halfway at the 18th century this former medicine was processed with sugar by an English pharmacist and sold as candy. This turned out to be an absolute success and quickly after the liquorice was also available in the Netherlands. Even though in fact liquorice is not a Dutch invention, muntdrop is. This famous coin liquorice made his first appearance on the market in the 19th century. And is now partly responsible for the fact that The Netherlands has the biggest production of licorice.
