Pea soup is a typical Dutch soup eaten primarily in winter. In the Netherlands, it is known as erwtensoep or, popularly, snert. It is made for the most part from split peas, potatoes, leek and celery, and smoked sausage slices are often added to it. For those who are unfamiliar with pea soup, it can be recognised from its thick, dense consistency, rather like that of a vegetable cream. In the Netherlands, pea soup is usually eaten alongside rye bread with cheese or meats.

Did you know that the Dutch enjoy eating pea soup after ice-skating? They prepare it in large amounts on return, whereby, they say, its flavour improves. They say as well that its flavour is improved by leaving it to stand for a day.

Ready-made pea soup

While you can make your own pea soup at home, if you do not feel like cooking, canned soup is a perfect solution. Every Dutch supermarket offers ready-made pea soup in a number of formats and sizes. Among the broad selection of brands, Unox is one of the most popular. Unox’s pea soup is made following the traditional recipe and even contains slices of smoked sausage. Did you know that a serving of Unox’s pea soup is equivalent to at least 179 grams of vegetables? For those who seek to introduce a bit of variety, Super Lekker offers, in addition to the classical pea soup, a spicy pea soup.

The origin of pea soup

Pea soup is a much beloved soup not only in the Netherlands, but also in Germany and in Nordic countries such as Finland and Sweden. Its origin is uncertain and, while some assert that it was first made by the ancient Greeks long before Christ, others suggest that it was already part of Asian cuisine centuries earlier. Nevertheless, Dutch pea soup is unique and, unlike that of other countries, has become firmly rooted in tradition.

Together with Unox Tomato Soup, this Pea soup is normally one of the most liked flavors!
